How do I view Assessment Series data in the Administrator Data Dashboard?

This article is intended only for CommonLit School Essentials PRO & PRO Plus customers and partners with Administrator Data access.

Overview

Access to the Administrator Data dashboard allows you to view Assessment Series data across your school or district. As each assessment is unique, you can view data for one specific assessment (e.g. the 6th Grade Pre-Assessment) at a time.

If you have District-Level access, you will be able to view Assessment Series data for all schools in your district's subscription. Alternatively, if you have School-Level access, you will be able to view the data for whichever schools have been enabled on your CommonLit account. All users with administrator data access will be able to view Assessment Series data by school, teacher, or class. Users with administrator data access for the district will also be able to access district-wide assessment data.

Locating Assessment Series data

In addition to the data available in the Assessment Series section on the main page of the dashboard, you can also locate additional Assessment Series data by using the embedded links or filters. These can be used to navigate to the School-Level, Teacher-Level, and Class-Level Assessment Details pages as well as the District-Level Assessment Details page for users with district-level access.

One way to locate Assessment Series data is by using the embedded links. From the main page of the Administrator Data Dashboard, scroll down to the Assessment Series section and select the Grade-Level and Assessment you would like to view. If you have access to data in a single school, you will be able to click the link for all students in a school, a class, or a teacher. These links will take you to the School-Level, Class-Level, and Teacher-Level Assessment Details page, respectively. Alternatively, if you have access to data for multiple schools, you will be able to click a link to view the data for all students in the district who completed that assessment, which will take you to the District-Level Assessment Details page.

Using filters

You can also locate Assessment Series data using filters. Start by clicking Filters at the top of the dashboard. Then, you can use the Schools, Teacher, and Class filters to locate At a Glance data for a specific school, teacher, or class. (Note: Some filters can only be used once another filter has been selected. To select a teacher, you will first need to select a school, and to select a class, you will first need to select a teacher.)

Additionally, if you have district-level access and want to view the data for the entire district, you can click Apply after selecting the specific assessment.

💡Tip: You can re-open the filters from any page in the dashboard by scrolling up and clicking Filters. To navigate to a different assessment or the data for a different school, class, or teacher, open the Filters view and choose new filters.

🗓️ Important note about filtering Assessment Series data in the Administrator Data Dashboard by time frame: Assessment Series data can only be filtered by school year. This means you will not be able to select a more specific date range (e.g. 1/1 - 6/1) and only see Assessment Series data for that time frame. In CommonLit, the school year begins on 7/1 and ends on 6/30, so you will see data for any rosters that were active during that range, as well as data for any students that were actively enrolled in a class during that time frame. Additionally, students who were removed from a class will still be included in the data as long as they were actively enrolled in a class during that time frame.

Result Breakdowns

A high-level breakdown of results for a specific assessment can be found in the Assessment Series section on the main page of the Administrator Data Dashboard as well as the District-Level, School-Level, Teacher-Level, and Class-Level Assessment Details pages.

Student Performance Groups

In this section, regardless of whether you are on the main dashboard page or an Assessment Details page, you will be able to see how many students who took the assessment were Below or Approaching Grade Level, On Grade Level, and Above Grade Level, as well as the total Percent Proficient for all submissions. A student's Performance Group is determined by their Scaled Score, which takes into account the difficulty of a question. You can see the Scaled Score range for each Performance Group in this section.

Assessment Performance Overviews

Assessment Performance Overviews provide a quick snapshot of assessment data for a specific assessment.

When viewing the Assessment Performance overviews on the District-Level, School-Level, and Teacher-Level Assessment Details pages for any assessment, you will see the Submission Rate, Percent Proficient, and Average Scaled Score. Additionally, the granularity of the data you see (e.g. Assessment Performance by School or by Class) will depend on the page you are on. For example, if you are on the School-Level Assessment Details page, you will be able to view these metrics school-wide and by class.

When viewing the Assessment Performance overview on the Class-Level Assessment Details page, you will be able to see additional data breakdowns for, including Scaled Score, Performance Group, and Percent Correct averages. You will also be able to see individual student data such as Percentile Ranking, Scaled Score, Performance Group, and Percent Correct.

Growth Data

Assessment Series Growth Data can also be found in the Assessment Series section on the main page of the Administrator Data Dashboard. Growth Data shows how students' Scaled Scores compare between the Pre, Mid, and Post-Assessments. To view this data, select the Grade-Level and the Growth tab. (Note: You can view this data for a specific School, Teacher, or Class by using the filters).

At a Glance data

At a Glance data includes the Percent Proficient metric and the Submission Rate for a specific assessment. These metrics make Assessment Series reports faster to interpret, easier to use, and more aligned across roles. This data is included on the District-Level, School-Level, Teacher-Level, and Class-Level Assessment details pages.

Percent Proficient

This metric shows the percentage of students meeting (“on grade-level”) or exceeding (“above grade-level”) expectations to help you quickly understand how a group’s performance compares in context, without needing to do manual calculations.

Submission Rate (Submitted/Assigned)

This metric shows in real time how many students have submitted an assessment compared to how many were assigned. This makes it easier to confirm whether data within district, school, class, and teacher-level reports is complete before analysis.

Standards-based performance data

Standards-based data can be found on the District-Level, School-Level, Teacher-Level, and Class-Level Assessment Details pages. There are two ways to view standards-based data.

Assessed Standards Item Overview

The Assessed Standards Item Overview displays the average performance on each question broken down by standard. This section includes separate displays for Literary and Informational standards. Use the toggle to switch between standards groups.

Standards Performance Overview

The Standards Performance Overview provides an overall performance average for each standard and can also be toggled between Literary and Informational standards. The average displayed takes into account student performance on all questions that addressed a particular standard across the assessment. Depending on the page you are on, you will see a breakdown by school, class, or student.

Additional tips

Viewing historical data

Users with access to administrator data can view the data from previous school years. This can be helpful for comparing how students perform on assessments from one year to the next as well as providing teachers with additional context about students' performance and progress.

Note: Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, CommonLit established stable cutoff scaled scores for Student Performance Groups, allowing this Assessment Series data to be compared year-over-year.

In the Administrator Data Dashboard, Assessment Series data can only be filtered by the School Year filter. To view the data from a previous school year, click Filters at the top of any page. Then, click the drop down under School Year to select the year you want to view, and click Update filters.

Downloading reports

Reports for Assessment Series can be downloaded throughout the Administrator Dashboard. These reports are provided in a spreadsheet format and will download as either a .CSV or .XSLX file depending on the report. To download a report, look for a "Download CSV" button or a button that includes "Report."

For example, for any specific assessment, you can download School, Teacher, and Class Assessment Reports as well as District Assessment Reports if you have District-Level Access. These are comprehensive reports that include student details, including their email, first and last name, grade level, and Clever SIS ID or ClassLink Identifier if the student is connected to either integration. Furthermore, these reports will include the following data for each student:

  • Percentile Ranking
  • Scaled Score
  • Performance Group
  • Percent Correct
  • Standards performance averages (combined literary and informational)
  • Performance by question

These reports can be downloaded from the District-Level, School-Level, Teacher-Level, or Class-Level Assessment Details. Simply look for the teal button in the top right corner.
