How do I view student performance across assignments?

You can view students' performance across assignments by using the student performance pages. There are three pages, each providing a more specific view of the data:

  1. Overall Performance (All classes)
  2. Class Performance
  3. Student Performance

Overall Performance (All classes)

To get to this page, My Classes > Overall Performance. This page provides a snapshot of how students are performing across your classes, including:

Assignment Averages: The overall assignment average across all classes and the assignment average for each class

Highlights: A list of your highest performing students and those that demonstrate areas for improvement

Assessment Series or Free Reading Assessment: Cards you can click to quickly navigate to the data from any assessments you've administered

Assignment Breakdown: A table that displays any whole class assignments across your classes as well as the overall average score on an assignment for all classes and the average score for each individual class (Tip: Download this report by clicking Download to CSV)

Standards Performance: A table that displays how each class is performing on specific standards as well as the overall performance across classes (Tip: Download this report by clicking Download Standards Report)

Assignment Averages over Time: A chart that shows assignment averages for your classes across the school year

The Overall Performance page provides data for graded assignments only, with the exception of the standards data. In the Assignment Breakdown, every class average for an assignment will lead to that class' Assignment Report which provides item analysis and multiple choice scores.

Please note this page does not contain data for small group assignments. To learn how to ensure small group assignment data appears on the Overall Performance page, see: How do I assign a lesson to a single student or small group of students?

Class Performance

To view data for a specific class, click on the name of a class in the Assignment Averages section at the top. Alternatively, you can click on a class in the Assignment Breakdown table. There, you will see a breakdown of the data for that class similar to what is available on the Overall Performance page:

At a Glance: A quick overview that includes the overall assignment average for the class, how students are performing by question type (short answer ane multiple choice), and a Performance Snapshot that shows a breakdown of how students are doing based on their assignment averages (Tip: Hover over any section of the pie chart to see a list of students with averages in that range.)

Highlights: A list of your highest performing students and those that demonstrate areas for improvement

Assessment Series or Free Reading Assessment: Cards you can click to quickly navigate to the data from any assessments you've administered

💡 Click Print All Students' Assessment Data to download a report that includes each student's assessment performance on a separate page for easy sharing.

Assignment Breakdown: A table that displays the overall score for each student on all whole class assignments as well as each student's average across assignments (Tip: Download this report by clicking Download to CSV)

Standards Performance: A table that displays how each student is performing on specific standards as well as the average performance of all students (Tip: Download this report by clicking Download Standards Report)

Assignment Averages over Time: A chart that shows assignment averages for your class across the school year

Like the Overall Performance page, you will only see scores for graded class assignments. Ungraded assignments and small group assignments for students in that class will not be included. To learn how to ensure small group assignment data appears on the Class Performance page, see: How do I assign a lesson to a single student or small group of students?

ℹ️ You can download or print all Individual Student Progress Reports for every student in the class from this page. The reports include data from all of their assignments in all classes, as well as individual assignments. This option is a great one-stop shop resource for conferences or for creating student portfolios. To download these reports, click Print All Students' Reports in the top right corner.

Student Performance

To view the Student Performance page for an individual student, click on the name of a student in the Performance by Assignment table. Alternatively, you can click My Classes > Manage Classes and then select a class. From the Manage Students page, click View Data for any student to navigate to their Student Performance page. Once on this page, you can use the Students dropdown menu at the top to switch between students.

The Student Performance page contains different sections and data viewing options than the broader performance pages. Unlike the Overall and Class Performance pages, you can see information on all assignments a student has been assigned, including incomplete, ungraded, and small group assignments. The following sections are included on the Student Performance page:

Assessment Series/Free Reading Assessment Performance

This table provides a breakdown of the student's performance on any assessments they've completed, including data points like overall percent correct, percentile ranking, Scaled Score (if using the Assessment Series), and percent correct by standard. Click Download Report to download a copy for your records.

Unit Skills Assessment Performance (available for PRO Plus customers)

This section shows how the student performed on individual Unit Skills Assessments, including their overall score, multiple choice percent correct, and short answer average (if assigned). To download a copy of the Overall Performance table, click Download report.

There is also a Standards Performance section that allows you to see how the student performed on the assessed standards. If a student has submitted more than one USA, you can use the drop down to switch between standards performance on different assessments.

Assignment Performance

This section includes several tables. At the top, you will see the All Classes: Submitted Assignments table, which includes data both whole class and small group assignments. In this table, you can see their overall score, multiple choice percent correct, and short answer average for each assignment. You can also click View Responses to see their response to a short answer question and any feedback you provided.

Below this is the All Classes: Incomplete Assignments table, which includes all assignments a student has been assigned but not submitted. You can use this table to quickly see if a student has outstanding assignments or see if they've made progress on an outstanding assignment.

💡 You can click on the name of the assignment in either the Submitted Assignments or Incomplete Assignments tables to navigate to the Assignment Report.

This section also provides the ability to view performance by standard. The Assignment Performance by Standard table shows how a student has performed on standards across the assignments they have submitted. You can also use the Individual Standard Analysis table to select a standard and see how the student performed on that standard for any assignments where it was assessed.

🖨️ Click Print Report in the top right corner of the page to download or print a PDF of the data on the Student Performance page. This report will include the sections you see on CommonLit as well as sections for students' short answer responses and any provided feedback for all assignments.
