How do I assign a lesson to a single student or small group of students?

There are two ways to create an individual or small group assignment.

Option 1: When creating an assignment, under Assign to, choose "Individual Students" and use the drop down to manually add each student you wish to assign the lesson to. This assignment will be listed on your Assignments page under Individual and Small Group Assignments. Please note: once you have created an individual or small group assignment, you will not be able to add students to the assignment. If you decide you would like to assign the lesson to additional students, you will need to create a new individual or small group assignment.

Option 2: Create a class-wide assignment as usual and then exempt the students who should not take it from the Assignment Report. You can get to the Assignment Report by clicking on My Classes at the top of the page > Assignments > Dashboard (for the particular assignment) > Assignment Report (link on the left hand side). Scroll to the bottom and use the check boxes under the "Incomplete Assignments" list to exempt students.

Note: for CommonLit 360 Lessons and Target Lessons, uncheck the "Only show submitted students" check box on the Assignment Report and exempt students from the Total Scores column in the Overall Scores table.

The benefits of creating a class-wide assignment and exempting students include the ability to assign the text to additional students later, keep your assignment better organized, and allow these assignments to appear on your Student Performance pages.
