What happened to essential and recommended lessons? Why are some texts marked optional?

CommonLit received feedback from teachers that they needed clarification about the various tags in CommonLit 360 Edition 1.0 for Middle School (grades 6-8). In response to this feedback, any lesson not marked Optional within the CommonLit 360 Edition 2.0 for Middle School units is considered an essential lesson to the unit.
