How does CommonLit address cheating on its assessments?

CommonLit takes test security very seriously. We require that all teachers sign up for our program with an approved school email address. Access to assessment products such as the Assessment Series and Unit Skill assessments is limited to teachers with confirmed school email addresses in verified customer schools.

CommonLit’s Terms of Use clearly state that sharing test content (including test passages, questions, and/or answer keys) is inappropriate and illegal. We disable copying across our assessments and systematically search the internet (including third-party websites) for CommonLit materials. Any content found is documented, and copyright violation notices are sent to the offenders.

Educators also play an important role in preventing cheating through careful test proctoring, which includes:

  • Actively monitoring students’ screens during testing.
  • Reviewing testing expectations with students (e.g., establish that students should not open other tabs while taking the test on their devices).
  • Ensuring that students’ desks or work areas are clear other than the necessary testing materials, and especially ensuring that any student phones are put away.
  • Using the lock feature to prevent students from accessing test content outside of a proctored setting (in cases where a student needs to finish a test across multiple class periods).
