Short response questions in CommonLit 360 Reading Lessons and Unit Skills Assessments are tied to reading focus skills. The scoring guidance prioritizes how well students demonstrate the focus skill and comprehend the text. Because these responses are designed as quick, on-demand writing tasks completed in 10–15 minutes, they are not expected to be polished pieces of writing.

These short responses are formative. They are meant to inform instruction and help you identify trends across the class, not to serve as summative evaluations of student performance. You should use response patterns to decide whether to move on or plan a targeted follow-up, rather than treating each score as a final grade.
