Manage rosters for Google Classroom-imported classes

Classes imported from Google Classroom do not automatically update in CommonLit when changes are made in CommonLit. Instead, you can sync classes with Google Classroom to import new students or manually remove students who have left the class.

Add new students

If you add students to your classes in Google Classroom and want to add those students to the class in CommonLit:

  1. Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left and select Manage Classes
  2. Click the Sync button for the class you have added students to in Google Classroom (Note: Classes can only be synced individually. If multiple classes have new students, click the Sync button for each class.)
  3. Refresh the page after about a minute to see your updated roster.

Remove students

Syncing a class will add new students, but it will not remove students. To remove a student:

  1. Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left
  2. Choose the Manage Classes tab
  3. Select the student's class to navigate to the Manage Students page
  4. Find the student you wish to delete and click the remove user icon to the right of View Data in the Actions column
  5. Confirm by clicking Remove Student

Post assignments and export scores to Google Classroom

Texts and lessons assigned to Google Classroom-imported classes can be posted directly to your Google Classroom stream. When you create an assignment, you will see a Lesson Assigned window that allows you to post the assignment to Google Classroom.

If you want to post the assignment to your stream and have grades pass back to Google Classroom, choose Post Assignment and Scores to Google Classroom. If you only want to post the assignment to your Google Classroom stream, choose Post Assignment to Google Classroom. (Note: If the options to post to Google Classroom are grayed out, the class was likely not imported from Google Classroom.)

Once you choose one of the options to post the assignment to Google Classroom, you will see an Edit Google Classroom Post window where you can edit the post before sharing. You can edit the title of the post, the total points the assignment will be worth, or the instructions that will be included. Once you're done making any edits, click the Share button.

Once the assignment is shared and the start date has arrived, students will see the assignment in Google Classroom and be able to click the link to go to the assignment in CommonLit.

Additional tips

If you don't post the assignment at first but decide to later, you can open the share window by going to your Assignments page, selecting the assignment you want to share, and clicking the arrow icon on the Assignment Dashboard. This will open the Share window where you can choose to post to Google Classroom.

Additionally, if you initially chose to just post the assignment to Google Classroom, but you decide later on that you want to export scores, go to your Assignments page and click the name of the assignment. Then, click Turn on above the Student Status table to enable grade passback.
