How can I remove a student from my class?
Overview
You can manually remove students from classes that were manually created or imported from Google Classroom. Removing a student from a class will not permanently delete the student's account, and you will still be able to view that student’s performance data for whole class assignments by clicking View Data in the Removed Students table. Please note, though, that their assignment data for small group assignments will not be maintained.
If the student has small group assignment data on their account, and they are moving to a different class of yours, please add them to the new class before removing them from the old class to maintain that data. Alternatively, you can download a record of their performance by going to the Manage Students page for the student’s class, clicking the teal View Data button for that student, and selecting Print Report in the top right corner.

Removing a student from a manual or Google Classroom class
For classes created manually or imported from Google Classroom, students can only be removed manually by the primary teacher on the class. Secondary teachers cannot remove a student from a class. If you are the primary teacher, you can remove a student by following the steps below:
- Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left
- Choose the Manage Classes tab
- Select the student's class to navigate to the Manage Students page
- Find the student you wish to delete and click the remove user icon to the right of View Data in the Actions column
- Confirm by clicking Remove Student
ℹ️ Note: If you do not want to preserve a record of the student's former enrollment or data in your class, you can permanently remove the student from the class by clicking the trash can icon in the Removed Students table at the bottom of the Manage Students page.
Adding a student back to your class
If a student rejoins your class, or you accidentally removed a student, you can easily add the back using the steps below:
- Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left
- Choose the Manage Classes tab
- Select the class the student was removed from
- Scroll to the bottom of the Manage Students page to find the Removed Students table
- Click Add back to class in the Actions column

Please Note: If a student is removed from a class before being added to another class belonging to the same teacher, their assignment data for whole-class assignments will be maintained, but their assignment data for individual or small group assignments will be lost.

Removing a student from a Clever, ClassLink, or Canvas class
Classes imported from Clever, ClassLink, and Canvas are controlled by the integration. This means that students cannot be manually removed. Instead, the student needs to be removed from the class in the integration first. Once they have been removed from the class in Clever, ClassLink, or Canvas you can sync the class in CommonLit to update the roster.
Clever classes
If the student's class is imported from Clever, once they have been removed from the class in Clever, you can click the Sync with Clever button at the top of the Manage Classes page. Please note, it can take up to 15 minutes for a sync to complete.

If the student has not been removed after 15 minutes, double check that the student was removed from the class you are syncing. For example, if you are syncing the first semester version of the class, but the student was only removed from the second semester version of the class in Clever, they will not be removed from the first semester class in CommonLit.
If the student has been removed from the correct class in Clever, but they are not being removed via a sync in CommonLit, please email help@commonlit.org for assistance.
ClassLink classes
This section is intended only for CommonLit School Essentials customers.
Once a student has been removed from the class in ClassLink, you can click the Sync with Classlink button at the top of the Manage Classes page. Please note, it can take up to 15 minutes for a sync to complete.

If the student has not been removed after 15 minutes, double check that the student was removed from the class you are syncing. For example, if you are syncing the first semester version of the class, but the student was only removed from the second semester version of the class in ClassLink, they will not be removed from the first semester class in CommonLit.
If the student has been removed from the correct class in ClassLink, but they are not being removed via a sync in CommonLit, please email help@commonlit.org for assistance.
Canvas classes
This section is intended only for CommonLit School Essentials customers.
To remove a student from a Canvas-imported class, start by removing the student from the class in Canvas. Once the student has been removed in Canvas, you can click My Classes > Manage classes and then click the Sync button for the class.

Once you have synced the class, refresh the page and confirm the student was removed from the class. If syncing did not remove the student, please double check that the student was removed from the correct Canvas class.
