How do I view Free Reading Assessment data?
If your district purchased CommonLit School Essentials PRO or School Essentials PRO Plus, you will not have access to the Free Reading Assessment. Instead, you’ll be able to collect baseline data through the first assessment in the Assessment Series. You’ll also have access to a Mid-Year and a Post-Assessment to help you track students’ reading growth throughout the year.
The CommonLit Free Reading Assessment provides you with data on your students' application of grade-level reading comprehension skills.
You can view assessment data on the assessment's Analyze Data page as soon as at least one student has submitted their assessment. To do so, click My Classes (the teacher icon) and then choose the Assessment Series tab. From there, click on the assessment you would like to view data for and choose the Analyze Data tab.
On the Analyze Data page, you will see data presented in two sections: Student Performance Groups, which provides a quick snapshot of performance, and Overall Performance by Student, which provides more detailed data for each student.
Student Performance Groups
Students will be placed in one of four Student Performance Groups: High Performance, Medium Performance, Low Performance, and Very Low Performance. These groups are based on percentile rankings:
- High performance: Scores above 70th percentile
- Medium performance: Scores in 31-70th percentile
- Low performance: Scores in 11-30th percentile
- Very low performance: Scores in 0-10th percentile
Please note, percentile rankings are only calculated for students who took an assessment at the grade level on their account (e.g. a 9th grade student completing the 9th Grade Free Reading Assessment).
Overall Performance by Student
In this table, you will see the student's percentile ranking (if they took the assessment at their grade level), their overall score, and a breakdown of how they performed by standard. The Free Reading Assessment covers Common Core State Standards 1-6 for both informational and literary texts, or your state's corresponding standards.
This table is automatically sorted by student names. However, you can sort the table by any of the headers. Click once to sort ascending and twice to click descending. Clicking a third time will remove the sort.
📁 To download a copy of the report for your records, simply click the gray Download Performance Report button above the table.
Please note: CommonLit does not offer item analysis for assessments, so you will not be able to see how students answered individual questions. either teachers nor students can see how students answered individual questions. Additionally, students will not see their assessment on their My Assignments page after they have submitted, and their performance data for the assessment will not appear on their My Performance tab.
CommonLit does show teachers how students answered individual questions for all other CommonLit assignments. However, the Free Reading Assessment is merely intended to help you understand your students' proficiency at the start of the year so that you can then assign CommonLit reading assignments accordingly.
💡 Want to change the class and/or grade level you're viewing data for?
Use the filters at the top of the page to switch between data for different classes or grade levels. To adjust the class, use the My Classes dropdown. Choose a class from the list or choose "All classes" to view data across classes on that assessment and then click Apply.
If you teach students at multiple grade levels, you may want to adjust the grade level you're viewing data for. To do so, use the Assessment Grade dropdown to select a different grade and then click Apply.
