How do I share my Assessment Series assessment to Canvas?
This article is intended only for customers and partners using Canvas. Our Canvas integration is available for schools and districts who purchase a School Essentials package.
To link an assessment to Canvas, you must first schedule the assessment for your class(es) on CommonLit. For more information on how to schedule an assessment, please see: How do I schedule an Assessment Series test?
Once you’ve scheduled your assessment, go back to Canvas and follow the steps below:
- Go to your Assignments page and click the +Assignment button.
- Enter a name for the assignment and adjust the grading settings (Note: It is not possible to pass back Assessment Series scores to the Canvas gradebook.)
- For Submission Type, choose External Tool and select CommonLit.
- Select the appropriate CommonLit class.
- Choose the Assessment Series tab, select + Add to Canvas, and click the Select button in the Configure External Tool window.
- [Optional] Choose an "Available from" date on Canvas. (Note: CommonLit assessments are available at 3:00 AM ET on the scheduled start date. However, you can lock students' assessments prior to administering to ensure they cannot access the assessment outside of class.)
- Click Save or Save and Publish. Your assessment is now linked to Canvas! Students will be able to access the assessment from Canvas when the scheduled start date arrives.
Please note, Assessment Series scores cannot be passed back to Canvas. Linking an assessment to Canvas will only allow students to access those assessments from Canvas. CommonLit will not mark the assessment as turned in on Canvas or send scores to Canvas. To view assessment data, click Go to CommonLit.
