Lessons in a unit are marked as Essential, Recommended, or Optional. Reading and Writing Lessons are always marked as Essential. It is strongly recommended to teach all essential lessons in a unit. Essential lessons are the heart of a unit and are referred back to throughout the course of the unit. They also prepare students for the culminating task at the end of the unit.
