If your district has chosen to purchase Assessment Series in CommonLit School Essentials PRO or School Essentials PRO Plus, you will not have access to the Free Reading Assessment. Instead, you’ll be able to collect baseline data through the first assessment in the Assessment Series. You’ll also have access to a Mid-Year and a Post-Assessment to help you track students’ reading growth throughout the reading year.
CommonLit only offers a one-time Free Reading Assessment to be administered at the beginning of the school year or term; CommonLit does not provide a free post-assessment to accompany it.
However, you can create your own end-of-year assessment after you've administered the Free Reading Assessment at the start of the year (for data validity reasons, please do not delete the free assessment to reuse it as a post-assessment).
You can create your own version of a post-assessment by assigning three on-grade level texts, including 2 short informational texts and 1 short literary text. The texts should have Lexile levels in the EOY Lexile range for your students' grades, as provided by Lexile.
Additionally, be sure to only assign multiple-choice questions (the Free Reading Assessment does not contain any short-answer response questions in order to allow auto-grading and avoid grading bias). You can then use this data to inform your instruction later in the year. If you need assistance picking articles, please email help@commonlit.org.
