For Manually Created Classes:
If you are the primary teacher of a manually created class, you can promote a secondary teacher/co-teacher to be the class owner and serve as the primary teacher of the class.
Primary teachers can:
- Archive a class
- Delete a class
- Remove a student from a class
- Change a student's class
- Change a student's grade
- Delete an assignment
Secondary teachers cannot perform the above actions.
A class can only have one primary teacher. If you are the primary teacher, you can promote a secondary teacher to become the primary teacher and owner of a class (thereby demoting yourself to becoming a secondary teacher of the class). To do so:
- Go to Manage Classes
- Click Options for the class
- Click Manage Co-Teachers
- Click "Make Owner" for the secondary teacher you want to promote to class owner.
- Your co-teacher is now the class owner/primary teacher! They can delete classes, assignments, and students now, and you cannot.
For Google Classroom Classes:
In order to change the class owner of a class on CommonLit, the correct teacher must be the primary teacher on Google Classroom. If you are currently the primary teacher of a Google Classroom-imported class on CommonLit but need to transfer ownership to the class' current secondary teacher on CommonLit, you will need to go to the class on your Google Classroom account, click on People and find your co-teacher under the Teachers section, then click the three vertical dots next to their name and select the Make class owner option.
After completing that step and updating the class ownership on Google Classroom, either teacher can return to their CommonLit account, go to the Manage Classes page, and click the green SYNC button for the class in order to update the changes from Google Classroom. Then, the teachers should see that their roles have changed on CommonLit.
For Clever Classes:
If you are the primary teacher of a Clever-imported class, you will need to become the co-teacher for that class on Clever and the former co-teacher will need to become the primary teacher on Clever.
Then, if both teachers' CommonLit accounts are linked to Clever and they have successfully switched ownership of the class on Clever, we will reflect these changes from Clever during our weekly sync.
