In short, your students can log in to their previous accounts and click "Add another class code" to enter a new manually created class for the new school year. Students in Clever classes or GC classes will be automatically imported by their teachers into their new class this year.
What if my student does not remember their password and cannot log into their old account?
If your student has an existing account but is unsure of their password, they have a few options to access their account and join your class:
- If your student was imported from Google Classroom, or created their CommonLit account using a Gmail email address, they can click the "Log in with Google" option on the CommonLit login page. Students should log in to their Google account using their Gmail credentials. If the student is having issues logging in with Google, please help them enter their google credentials. Please note: If you are importing students from Google Classroom, CommonLit will grab their account from last year and add their account into your new class.
- If your student was imported from Clever, they can select the "Log in with Clever" option on the CommonLit homepage. Students should follow the login prompts and enter their Clever credentials to sign in. Please note: If you connected your CommonLit account to Clever, we will automatically import your classes and students from Clever, so students do not need to join your Clever-linked class - this is why you do not see a class code for Clever classes. If a student is missing from your roster or you have another issue with their account, please contact your district's Clever admin or help@commonlit.org.
- If your student added an email to their account during sign up or after signing up, they can request a reset password link on our reset password page by clicking here. Then, they should check their inbox for an email from CommonLit with further instructions. Note: Many school servers block emails to students from outside servers, so this method does not always work for students.
- If your student does not have an email on their account and are not connected to Google Classroom or Clever but they are in another teacher's active CommonLit class, your student should ask their active teacher to reset their password for them manually. To do this, teachers should go to their Manage Classes > View Students page (for this student's class) and click the "RESET" button next to the student's name. After clicking reset, a pop-up will appear with further instructions on how the student should log in and set a new password.
Once your student is successfully logged in, students should go to their My Account page and select "add another class code" to join your new class (unless coming from GC or Clever) If you need additional information about how students join your manually-created class with an existing account, please check out this help article: How Do Students Join More Than One Class
If your student did not sign up with an email, is not connected to Google Classroom or Clever, and is not in an active class, please email help@commonlit.org with the student's full name (and username if known,) their previous teacher's name/email if known, and the name and class code of your class they should be added to. We will add this student to your class and reset their password for them so they can access their CommonLit account.
If you have any other questions or concerns, as always, feel free to email us at help@commonlit.org - we are happy to help!
