How do my students complete an assignment?

Before students can begin an assignment, they must be enrolled in a class for which you have created an assignment. You can create a class using CommonLit's free options such as manually creating a class, or importing from Google Classroom or Clever, or you can utilize integrations included with CommonLit's paid partnerships such as ClassLink or Canvas.

To begin the assignment, students should first log in to their CommonLit account. Once logged in, they will see a notification bell in the top right corner of their screen indicating that they have an assignment to complete.

Direct students to their My Assignments page. Under the Assignments To Do section, students will need to click the Begin Assignment button to start their lesson.

From there, students will be prompted to read a short introduction with directions for what they should focus on while reading. Students should click Got It and begin reading the text.

If you have enabled Guided Reading Mode for this assignment, students will answer guiding questions as they read through the text. Once they have completed the text and the guiding questions, they can begin the assessment questions.

To begin answering the text-dependent questions, students must simply click the Begin Assessment button located on the panel on the right of the screen.

If you do not want your students to complete their assignments online, you can also print out the assignments for students to complete on paper. Simply click the Download PDF button above the title on any text’s page.
