Why can't I delete a student from a class?

There are two reasons you may not be able to delete a student from a class:

  1. You are a secondary teacher for the class.
  2. The class was imported from Clever, Canvas, or ClassLink.

If you are a secondary teacher for a class, you will be unable to delete a student as only primary teachers (class owners) can delete students from a class. Secondary teachers cannot delete students from a class, archive or delete a class, or delete class assignments.

If the class was imported from Clever, Canvas, or ClassLink, the roster for that class is controlled by the integration, and students cannot be manually deleted. If a student was removed from the roster on the platform the CommonLit class was imported from, the student will be removed from the CommonLit class the next time it syncs with the integrating platform. The paid Clever integration syncs whenever changes are made in Clever, and the free Clever integration updates rosters once weekly (on Saturday evenings) to add or remove students and teachers from CommonLit classes, but teachers can request a mid-week sync from their Manage Classes page. Canvas users can sync their classes by clicking the SYNC button for the class on their Manage Classes page. Finally, ClassLink syncs are run nightly.
