How do I log in or sign up with Clever?

You can connect your CommonLit account to Clever if your school or district technology director has connected with CommonLit on Clever, and your data is being shared with CommonLit. Connecting your account to Clever enables you to log in with Clever and import any classes being shared with CommonLit.

How do I connect my CommonLit account to Clever?

You can connect your CommonLit account to Clever by logging in with Clever. To do so, select CommonLit in your Clever dashboard or choose the “Login with Clever” option on the CommonLit login page.

To connect your account to Clever, you will need to complete a brief onboarding process. If you have an existing CommonLit account, you can log into that account to connect it to Clever. If you do not yet have an account, you will need to create one. Once you have connected the two accounts, you should be able to log into CommonLit with one click.

Why am I receiving an error message?

If you receive an error message when you attempt to log in to CommonLit via Clever, it is most likely because your school or district has not shared its Clever data with CommonLit. Teachers and students cannot use CommonLit with Clever until their school or district has connected to CommonLit on Clever and shared its data.

Alternatively, if you are an administrator and your school or district uses the free version of the CommonLit integration with Clever, you may receive an error message. The free Clever integration does not support Single Sign-On (SSO) for staff members, including school and district administrators. Therefore, shared staff users may receive an "Unsupported user type" error message.

CommonLit does not support SSO for staff members because administrators do not have any special features on the free platform. If you are an administrator with classes in Clever that need to be imported to CommonLit, we recommend logging into your teacher profile in Clever before trying to log into CommonLit with Clever.

CommonLit School Essentials and School Essentials PRO packages support Clever SSO for staff and administrators. Administrators under our School Essentials PRO plan can use these accounts to access administrator-level features, including administrator data dashboards.

If your district is already sharing Clever data with CommonLit, and you are not user with a staff role in Clever, but you are still unable to connect your CommonLit account to Clever, please reach out to help@commonlit.org for assistance.

How will connecting to Clever impact my account?

Connecting your CommonLit account with Clever should not delete any previous data. Upon connecting your account, you will be given the option to import any Clever classes being shared with CommonLit. If you import the classes, they will not be merged with existing classes, so you may wind up with duplicate copies of your classes. However, your old classes and their data will remain unchanged.

How will importing classes from Clever impact students?

If you already have classes with students enrolled, and the students' accounts have emails that match their emails in Clever, the site will match existing student accounts and connect the students to Clever when you import your classes. Please note, this only works if Clever is sharing student emails with CommonLit, and those same emails already exist on student's accounts.

If students do not have emails on their accounts, you should go to your Manage Classes > Manage Students page and add emails to students' accounts before connecting to Clever to enable this automatic merging. You should also check to see if your students have emails in Clever first.
