Can I create student-choice assignments?

Only educators can assign texts directly to students through the CommonLit Digital platform. Students cannot assign a text to themselves or browse the Library.

However, teachers are still able to introduce opportunities for student choice on CommonLit. For instance, if using the CommonLit Library, teachers can select a group of texts from the library that share a common theme or topic and then create a class-wide assignment for each text. Then teachers can exempt students from the texts they do not choose by going to My Classes > Assignments > Assignment Dashboard > Assignment Report > Incomplete Assessments/Exempted Students and exempting any students who did not choose that text.

In addition, if teaching CommonLit 360, some of our CommonLit 360 units include choice board activities that suggest pre-selected texts that students can choose between. Those choice board assignments include helpful teacher guidance for facilitating student choice in the classroom.
