Can I create student-choice assignments?

Only adult users, such as teachers, parents, and administrators, can assign texts directly to students through the CommonLit Digital platform. Students cannot assign a text to themselves.

However, students grades 6 and up are free to browse and view texts in the Library. You can ask students to search the library for texts that interest them. They can then click on the heart, or Favorite icon, in the top right corner of the text thumbnail. This Favorite icon is also located above the text title on the main text page. After students have favorited their selected texts, they can come to you with their selections. Alternatively, you could provide a list of text options for students to choose from.

To create a student-choice assignment, you can create a class-wide assignment for that text and then exempt students who did not choose that text by going to My Classes > Assignments > Assignment Dashboard > Assignment Report > Incomplete Assessments/Exempted Students and exempting any students who did not choose that text.

You can also create individual or small group assignments for students based on their selected texts. However, creating a class-wide assignment and then exempting students from that is recommended. This is so that you can always add a student back to the assignment if they choose it later, keep your assignments more streamlined, and ensure the data is visible on Student Performance and Class Performance pages.

Students can also download and print the student version of the text PDF by clicking the Download PDF button located above the text title.
