How can I set when an assignment starts and when it is due?

All CommonLit assignments come with editable start dates and times as well as due dates and times. Students cannot see or access the assignment on CommonLit before the start date and time arrives.

Start dates and times allow you to plan your lessons in advance without letting students see or access them before you want them to. You can set the start date and time when you create an assignment. Currently, the start date defaults to the creation date, and the start time defaults to 12:00 AM in your time zone.

Additionally, you must select a due date to create the assignment, and you must also set a due time (currently the time defaults to 11:59 PM in your time zone). You cannot set due dates or times in the past.

Please note: the due date and time does not remove student access to the assignment, so students will still be able to submit the assignment after the due date and time has passed, and their submission will be marked as late on the Assignment Report.

Additionally, as long as no students have started the assignment, you can edit the start date and time after creating an assignment by opening the Edit Assignment view. You can also edit the due date and time regardless of whether or not students have started. Do this from the Assignments page by clicking the pencil icon for an assignment (Edit Assignment on mobile). You can change the start date or time as well as the due date or time and click Save changes. If you move it to a future date, students will not be able to see it.

Furthermore, when creating an assignment for more than one class at a time, you will not be able to select individual start and due times for each class. However, you can edit the assignment in each class to set separate start and/or due times.

Note: You can share an assignment link to Google Classroom before the start date or time. If students click the assignment link on an assignment with a start date or time in the future, they will not be able to access the assignment.
