What should I do if a student has created more than one account?
If a student has two or more CommonLit accounts, you can merge the student's duplicate accounts if they are all enrolled in the same class. This way, they will have just one set of login credentials and all of their assignments and progress on one account.
Please note, you can merge duplicate accounts imported from Clever, Google Classroom, Canvas, or ClassLink. For specific information, see: Merging student accounts imported from an integration.
To merge a student's duplicate accounts:
- Go to your Manage Classes page.
- Click the class name for the class in which your student has created more than one account.
- Use the check boxes to select the student's duplicate accounts. (Please note: you can only merge two accounts at a time.)
- Scroll up to the top of the Manage Students table and click the Merge Students button to merge the two accounts.
- Choose the username you wish for the student to keep on their newly merged account. It is recommended that teachers check with the student to find out which account they know the password for.

Merging a Google student account with a non-Google account without an email
When merging a Google account and a non-Google account, CommonLit will always preserve the Google account's email, username, and password. If the student's second account does not have an email in CommonLit, the merged account will maintain the Google email.
For example, if a student has an account connected to Google Classroom and an account connected to Clever, but an email is not being shared for the student on Clever, you can merge their duplicate accounts and they will be able to log in to CommonLit using any other integrations they are associated with. CommonLit will keep their Google email, their merged account will be attached to Google and any other integrations they are associated with, and their scores will be exported to Google Classroom.
Merging a Google student account with a non-Google student account with mismatched emails
If a student’s email is shared with CommonLit on Clever or ClassLink and that email doesn’t match the email associated with their account imported from Google Classroom, you can merge their duplicate accounts, and they will be able to log in using Google and any other integrations they are associated with. CommonLit will keep their Google email, their merged account will be attached to Google and any other integrations they are associated with, and their scores will be exported to Google Classroom.
ℹ️ Please note, you cannot merge two accounts that are both connected to Google Classroom. If a student has two accounts connected to Google Classroom, please contact help@commonlit.org for assistance.
