How do students create their accounts if they're not imported from an integration like Google Classroom or Clever?

If you create classes manually instead of importing them from an integration, students can join the class using the class code. Once you've created your classes, go to your Manage Classes page. Then, click Options for a specific class and select Add Students.

In the Instructions for Students view, you will see the unique class code for that class. Additionally, you will see two sets of instructions to share depending on whether or not students have an account:

  1. If students already have an account: Have them log in and click "Add another class code" to enter the class code and join your class.
  2. If students do not yet have an account: Have them to go to www.commonlit.org/enroll and enter the class fode for their class. To create their account, they will need to enter:
    • Their first & last name
    • Their grade: They will be able to select any grade level listed on the class they are joining. If there is only one grade level listed, they will only be able to select that grade.
    • (Optional) Their email address: Students do not need to enter an email address to sign up. However, if their school-issued email is provided by Google, we recommend having them add their email so they can sign in using "Log in with Google" option (this is true even if you do not use Google Classroom).
    • A password: Students should enter a unique password they have not used before. We recommend choosing two unrelated words for a secure password that is easy to remember.

🖨️ You can print the How to Set Up Your CommonLit Student Account handout, write in the class code for your class, and make copies to share with students to help them create their accounts. There's even a spot for them to write their username and password to use when logging in.
