How do I archive a class?
Overview
The primary teacher on a class can archive the class at the end of the school year or at the beginning of a new school year or semester to help declutter the My Classes page and ensure students do not have access to old assignments or classes. When you archive a class, it will be removed from view for you and your students. However, you will still be able to view whole class assignment and assessment data or restore a class from the Archived Classes page.
Please note, you can only manually archive classes that were created manually and classes imported from Google Classroom or Canvas. Classes imported from Clever and ClassLink* are controlled by the integration and cannot be manually archived. Instead, they will be archived when they are unshared with CommonLit. However, you can hide these classes to remove them from view.
In this article, we will cover:
- Archiving manually created, Google Classroom, or Canvas classes
- Viewing data for or restoring an archived class
- Hiding Clever or ClassLink classes
*The ClassLink integration is available for School Essentials PRO and PRO Plus customers.
Archiving manually created, Google Classroom, or Canvas classes
You can archive a manually created class or a class imported from Google Classroom or Canvas as long as you are the primary teacher on the class. To do so:
- Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left
- Choose the Manage Classes tab
- Click Options for the class you wish to archive and select Archive Class
- Confirm by clicking Archive Class again
Your class and the associated assignments will be removed from your My Classes page. Keep reading for information on viewing data for or restoring an archived class.
Viewing data for or restoring an archived class
You can view data for an archived class or restore the class if it was archived prematurely. To do so:
- Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left
- Choose the Manage Classes tab
- Click Archived Classes in the bottom right corner below your list of active classes
- To access the data for a class, click View Data
- To restore a class to your active classes, click Undo Archive
Hiding Clever or ClassLink classes
If your classes are imported from Clever or ClassLink, you will not be able to manually archive them as they are managed by your school or district. These classes will be archived when they are unshared on Clever or ClassLink.
However, you can hide classes if you are not using them to remove them from view. To do so:
- Click My Classes (the teacher) in the menu on the left
- Choose the Manage Classes tab
- Click Options for the class you wish to archive and select Hide Class
- Confirm by clicking Hide Class again
Once hidden, these classes will be removed from view for you and your students. The classes will be saved under the Hidden Classes section on your Manage Classes page. You can always unhide a class by clicking Hidden Classes > Options > Undo Hide.
💡 Tip: If you are hiding Clever or ClassLink classes because they are for a different semester or marking period, we recommend nicknaming your classes first to indicate which marking period they belong you. You can find more information in our article about nicknaming Clever and ClassLink classes.
