Can students come back and finish an assignment at a later date?

Yes! Students do not have to finish an assignment on CommonLit in one sitting and CommonLit does not close assignments to student submissions regardless of the due date or the status. As long as the student clicks the Save and Next button at the bottom of the question after selecting or writing each of their answers, their progress will be saved.

The next time a student logs into their CommonLit account, they will still see the assignment on the My Assignments page under the Assignments to Do section. They will just need to click the Resume Assignment button, and then they can pick up where they last left off.

Please note that we cannot save responses submitted while a student is logged out. Students may encounter an error message when attempting to complete an assignment while logged out, and their answers will not save. This situation can arise when students leave an assignment open and return to it later, as our system automatically logs students out after two hours to protect account security.

To avoid such issues, we recommend that students refresh their page or open CommonLit on a new tab to make sure they are logged in before resuming work on an assignment. Students should also ensure that they have a strong, stable internet connection.

If you experience any data loss despite these precautions, please contact our support team at help@commonlit.org.
