What assessments are included in CommonLit 360?

CommonLit 360 includes assessments throughout each unit to help you track student progress and measure learning. These fall into three main types: formative assessment questions, the Culminating Task, and Unit Skills Assessments.

Formative assessment questions

Most lessons in a CommonLit 360 unit include formative assessment questions. These help you track student progress as students move through the unit, so you can spot where they may need support along the way.

Culminating Tasks

Each unit ends with a Culminating Task, which serves as the unit's summative assessment. These are essays or presentations that ask students to analyze unit texts and apply the writing skills taught in the unit.

Culminating Tasks can demonstrate student learning through a variety of formats, including writing, speaking, presentations, research, or a combination of modes. They can also use different collaboration structures, such as small groups or pairs. Written tasks can include literary analysis, argumentative writing, or expository writing.

Each Culminating Task is assessed using its associated rubric, which helps you and your students understand performance in relation to the unit's focus standards. You can use this data to:

  • Evaluate students' overall understanding of unit knowledge and skills
  • Monitor student progress toward learning goals
  • Provide valuable feedback to students
  • Plan subsequent instruction

Unit Skills Assessments

CommonLit 360 also includes two Unit Skills Assessments per unit as part of the School Essentials PRO Plus package. These are curriculum-aligned cold read practice opportunities that provide a snapshot of student reading comprehension and their application of the unit's focus standards.
