What do the Assessment Series assessments look like for students?

Once the Start Date has arrived for the CommonLit assessment you scheduled for your class, your students will see the assessment appear on their My Assignments page under the class's name.

To begin, students should click on the assessment to open the test. Then, they will see a window pop up with general instructions as well as information about how to use the highlight tool, notepad tool, and the read aloud feature (student will only see this if read aloud has been enabled for them on your Student Status page). Once they have read through them, they should click Next, where they will see the Academic Honesty Statement. Once they've read the statement, they can click the Begin Assessment button to begin reading the passages and answering the questions. Note: They will see this window each time they refresh their page or re-open their test.

The assessments include three reading passages and multiple choice questions, some of which may be multi-select questions. Additionally, students can use the Notepad tool to take notes on specific texts.

Students can also highlight portions of text.

Students who have had the read aloud feature enabled should see the Read Aloud button listed in the upper right hand corner of the screen next to the Notepad button. 

Once they click that, they can then click the speaker icon next to each paragraph and question to hear specific sections read aloud. 

Please note: The Read Aloud feature will not show up for students unless it has specifically been enabled for them on your Student Status page. This feature should only be enabled for students who have read aloud listed as a testing accommodation on an IEP or 504.

Once students have carefully read the three texts and answered each question to the best of their ability, they should:

1. Click Next on the last question of the assessment.
2. Review and return to any unanswered questions flagged in the Review Assessment panel.
3. Click Next again, and then click Submit on the "Ready to submit assessment?" window that appears. If they need to return to the assessment for any reason, they can click Cancel.

Once the student has submitted their assessment, they will no longer see it on their My Assignments page.
