Canvas: How can I resolve an assignment conflict?

If you click on a Canvas assignment and can't open the linked CommonLit assignment, it may be due to a link conflict. Each CommonLit assignment can only be actively linked to one Canvas assignment at a time.

For example, a conflict arises if you link a CommonLit assignment to a Canvas assignment and then try to link that same CommonLit assignment to another assignment in Canvas.

To fix this issue, you have two options:

Option 1: Recreate this Canvas Assignment

Use this option if you'd rather start over with a brand-new Canvas assignment.

1. On the top right of your Canvas assignment that has the linked CommonLit assignment, click Edit Assignment Settings.

  1. Then, click the ellipsis on the top right and select Delete.

  2. After, click Assignments on your left course navigation.

  3. Click the blue + Assignment button to create a new assignment.

  1. Find "CommonLit" under Submission Type > External Tool.

  1. Select the CommonLit class with the assignment you want to link to Canvas.

  1. Select the CommonLit assignment you want to link to Canvas.

You should now be able to access your CommonLit assignment from Canvas.

This option releases the CommonLit assignment from whichever Canvas assignment it was mistakenly linked to. Use this option if you want to keep this exact Canvas assignment and just need to restore the connection back to the CommonLit assignment.

  1. Click My Classes in the menu on the left.
  2. Go to the All Assignments tab for a class and locate the assignment you wish to unlink.
  3. On the Assignment Dashboard page, click the Unlink Canvas button.

  1. Then, go to Canvas and click on your Canvas assignment again.
  2. You should now be able to link the CommonLit assignment to that assignment in Canvas. For more information, see Step 5 in “Option 1: Recreate this Canvas Assignment”

If you have separate classes in CommonLit for each of your Canvas sections, see: "How can I use Canvas sections with CommonLit?"
