How do I join a class as a co-teacher if it was imported from Canvas?

This article is intended only for customers and partners using Canvas. Our Canvas integration is available for schools and districts who purchase a School Essentials PRO package.

There are two ways to join a class that was already imported from Canvas if you are a co-teacher.

  1. Connect your account to Canvas and have your co-teacher sync it
  2. Join the class as a co-teacher with the class code

Option 1: Join Class as Co-teacher from Canvas

To connect your account to Canvas, you need to attempt to create a Canvas assignment.

1. Confirm you are enrolled in the same official public or private school as your co-teacher. Go to your My Account page and click Edit for the school to make sure it is not an "other" school.

2. Go to your course on Canvas.

3. Click the Assignments option on the course navigation panel.

4. Click the "+ Assignment" button

  1. Under Submission Type, select External Tool from the dropdown. Then, click "Find."

  1. Select "CommonLit"
  2. Grant CommonLit permission to integrate with your Canvas account by logging in with your existing CommonLit account or by creating a new CommonLit account.

That's all we need for your co-teacher to sync the class and import you! You can exit out of the process now. If you don't exit out of the import process, you will see an error screen until your primary teacher syncs your class.

Option 2: Join Class as Co-Teacher with class code

1. Confirm you are enrolled in the same official public or private school as your co-teacher. Go to your My Account page and click Edit for the school to make sure it is not an "other" school.

2. Ask the primary teacher for the class code for the class you would like to join.

3. Go to your Manage Classes page.

4. Click Join Class as Co-Teacher.

  1. Enter the Class Code and submit.

The class owner will receive a notification that they need to accept (or decline) your request.

We'll notify you when the request is accepted or denied.
