How do I import a Canvas course?
This article is intended only for customers and partners using Canvas. Our Canvas integration is available for schools and districts who purchase a CommonLit School Essentials package.
While your class does not need to be imported from Canvas in order to link CommonLit assignments to Canvas, you have the option to import a Canvas course into CommonLit. You can import any published, available Canvas courses as CommonLit classes.
Please note, it is not possible to import sections or cross-listed classes as individual CommonLit classes. Since you can only import the course, all students will appear in the same class. CommonLit will still send scores to Canvas, so you will be able to view grades for each section on your Canvas gradebook. If you would prefer to have individual classes for each section and link assignments to Canvas, please refer to our Using Canvas Sections with CommonLit guide.
To import a Canvas course:
- On Canvas, go to the Assignments section and click + Assignment.
- On your Assignment form, select External Tool under Submission Type.
- Click Find to search for CommonLit. Select CommonLit as your external tool.
- If you haven’t already done so, you'll first be prompted to connect your existing CommonLit account to Canvas or create a new CommonLit account linked to Canvas.
- If your class is published and available to import, click Import Class or click Import from Canvas at the bottom of the screen.
- Select the grade levels and subjects associated with your class, then click Import.
- CommonLit will automatically import your class and its students and co-teachers.
